Sandrine Kiberlain (Actor), Nicole Garcia (Actor) Comedy Editorial Review
In "Alias Betty," acclaimed French filmmaker Claude Miller presents a compelling narrative that intertwines the themes of loss, motherhood, and moral dilemmas within the context of contemporary French society. The film follows Betty, a novelist played by Sandrine Kiberlain, who grapples with the devastating loss of her young son. Her journey into despair takes an unexpected turn when she forms an attachment to another boy whose troubled mother is absent. The film's rich characterization and societal commentary draw parallels to the work of mystery writer Patricia Highsmith, earning it a place as both a psychological thriller and an intimate drama. Miller's direction skillfully contrasts different socioeconomic backgrounds, showcasing the stark realities of life in the projects alongside the comforts of affluent suburban living. The authenticity of the characters, ranging from Betty's complicated relationship with her mentally unstable mother to the vivid portrayal of a streetwise mother, lends the story a grounded realism that resonates with viewers. The performances are highlighted by Kiberlain's nuanced portrayal, which earned her accolades at film festivals, and the compelling supporting cast who embody ordinary individuals rather than typical Hollywood archetypes. The film's structure, guided by Miller's adept handling of twists and turns, effectively keeps the audience engaged, leading to an unexpected climax that challenges viewers' perceptions of right and wrong. The narrative does not shy away from darker themes, particularly involving children, making it a poignant and unsettling watch. Overall, "Alias Betty" manages to be both thrilling and profoundly human, presenting a narrative that hooks the viewer while exploring the complex moral landscape of its characters. **
