While the book is not one of Dickens' more comedic stories, parts are amusing. The ending lines, "It is a far, far better thing that I do, than I have ever done; it is a far, far better rest that I go to, than I have ever known," are known to many. Critics acclaim the book for its storytelling and character development. The characters are the novel's highlights, ranging from the noble Dr. Manette to the villainous Madame Defarge.
