Détails du produit
- . Why is the tendency to seek beauty in darkness strong only among Easterners? The West has also gone through times when there was no electricity, gas or oil, but as far as I know they have no tendency to enjoy the shadows. In ghost depictions, Japanese ghosts have not had feet since ancient times, but in the West, ghosts have feet, and their bodies are also chosen. We can tell from such a small difference that while pitch darkness adorns our fantasies, they make even ghosts clear as glass. Cunichiro Tanizaki, one of the giants of 20th century Japanese literature and the creator of great works, was accepted as the greatest writer of the period in his country throughout his career, and was later known as one of the big four of post-war Japanese literature, along with Haruki Murakami, Yasunari Kavabata and Yukio Mishima. In In Praise of the Shadow, Tanizaki discusses the modernizing world through darkness and light, comparing the reflexes of Eastern and Western societies towards progress. It draws attention not only to the shade, but also to things that we do not think much about in daily life, such as apartment roofs, toilets, lamps, paper and dinnerware, and in its unique style, which is not ostentatious. Cuniçiro Tanizaki Editorial Review
**** The book "The Shadow" has garnered attention for its unique exploration of the concept of shadow and its philosophical and aesthetic implications, particularly through the lens of Japanese culture. Reviewers have noted that the work does not follow a traditional narrative structure; instead, it acts as a reflective essay that delves into the intricate relationship between light and shadow in both architecture and everyday life in Japan. The author, Jun'ichirō Tanizaki, presents a deep appreciation for Japanese aesthetics while simultaneously lamenting the gradual Western influence on traditional Japanese customs and values. Readers have praised the book for providing insights into aspects of Japanese culture that they were previously unaware of, particularly concerning the stark contrasts between Eastern and Western ideals. The text is described as enlightening and never boring, allowing readers to glean a more nuanced understanding of Japanese heritage. Those familiar with Tanizaki’s work affirm that this piece continues his tradition of exploring cultural themes with grace and depth. While some reviewers expressed uncertainty about how to rate the book, clearly appreciating its content, the overall reception is favorable, highlighting its capacity to enrich readers' perspectives. One minor critique mentioned is a physical defect on the book's cover, but this seems to detract little from the overall reading experience. **
