- With so-called alternatives to prison, they are preparing us for something much worse than prison. Immediately after the publication of the text Surveillance and Punishment, Michel Foucault was invited to a conference in Montreal in 1976, where the subject was presented as an alternative to prisons. This book brings together Foucault's speech at that conference, edited by Sylvain Lafleur, and interviews on the ideas he presented. In that speech, Foucault describes the so-called prison alternatives as the prison spilling over into the free world; He states that he sees prison-specific forms of power as spreading beyond prison walls like cancerous tissue. He also makes important evaluations on the emergence of prisons, how they create illegality, the impact of illegality on the development of capitalism, and finally the relations between illegality and power. This work leads to re-discussing surveillance devices that continue to extend beyond prisons, in other words, today's world, where surveillance and confinement concern not only prisoners but the entire population.
